Cumann na mBunscol

5th Oct 2023

O’Brennan finished their Cumann na mBunscol league campaign with a very impressive victory away to Ardfert National School yesterday.

Having played against a very stiff breeze in the opening half, O’Brennan led by 2-3 to 0-2 at the interval, with the goals coming courtesy of rampaging midfielder Rory O’Connor, who finished to the net soccer style in the very first minute after Scott Fitzmaurice’s initial effort had come back off the post, and an unfortunate own goal from the Ardfert defence. Goalkeeper Tom Óg O’Regan was required to make a terrific save to preserve the lead and he was ably assisted by a tigerish defence throughout. O’Brennan’s first half points came from Shane Roche with a fisted effort and two from Michael Fitzpatrick, the first a free following a foul on himself and the second from play following an excellent assist from centre-back Dara Leen.

Upon the resumption, O’Brennan continued to hold the upper hand, with all of the substitutes contributing positively to what was a fine team performance overall.

Rory O’Connor scored the opening two points of the second half with excellent long-range efforts. These was followed by scores from Michael Fitzpatrick (free), Dara Leen, Tristan Foley and Shane Roche (following great approach play from Mikey Brosnan), before Rory O’Connor brought the scoring to a close with another point after intercepting an Ardfert kickout.

Overall, this was a great display by O’Brennan in what were very testing conditions. Well done to all of the players who togged out on the day! Well done also to coaches Mr O'Connor, Mr Breen and Mr Mangan!
